Story told by Fran Watkins about her parents.
When my father came to this country from Belgium the only word he could say in English was money. He was 18 years old and was a laborer all of his life. My father had relatives who lived in Canada and grew tobacco. One time my cousins took me and my mother to Canada for a visit. The year was 1932 and my father had not become a citizen as yet. Well, we had no trouble going into Canada, but when it came time to come back to the states, guess what, they would not let my mother back into the U.S. because my father was NOT A U.S. CITIZEN. They took my mom to court and it was two days before they allowed her to leave Canada. They checked my father out thoroughly and when they found out he was just a hard working immigrant with a clean background, they finally allowed my mom to leave. Needless to say, she never went back to Canada. Said it was the most terrifying moment of her life.
The reason I'm telling you this story is that when my father found out what they did to my mother because he was not a U.S. Citizen he immediately applied for his citizenship papers. So if the Canadians could do it back then, we here in the U.S. should be able to check the immigrants who are here illegally.
My father was so proud when he became a U.S. Citizen.
